Our review

A free account with clearly defined access channels

comdirect's Girokonto Aktiv is a fee-free current account aimed, according to its target-group definition, at employees, students, apprentices, and retirees. Unlike some competitors, a credit card is a fixed part of the account rather than an optional add-on.

The €100 bonus and its conditions

comdirect advertises a €100 bonus for new customers. To receive it, several conditions must be met at the same time:

  • Consent to receive marketing emails from Commerzbank AG at account opening — and not withdrawing that consent before the bonus is paid
  • At least five transactions (transfer, deposit or withdrawal, direct debit payment, or ATM withdrawal) of at least €25 each within the first three months after account opening
  • Only for genuine new customers who were not already comdirect customers in the six months before account opening

The bonus is therefore tied to a certain level of account activity in the first three months — simply opening the account without using it won't earn it. Important note: according to the terms on file, the full application had to reach comdirect by 31 August 2026. That date has already passed as of this review — before opening an account, check directly with comdirect whether the promotion has been extended or a new deadline applies.

Overdraft rates and safety

The arranged overdraft is charged at 8.9% (listed on a quarterly basis in the product data), and the tolerated overdraft at 13.4% per year. Deposits are protected up to €100,000 (100%) via the Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken GmbH — the standard German statutory scheme. The account can be accessed online, by phone, and via app, and an automated account-switching service is available.

Who is it for?

The Girokonto Aktiv suits employees, students, apprentices, and retirees who want a free account with full channel availability (online, phone, app) and are willing to show a minimum level of activity in the first few months to earn the bonus.

Pros and cons

  • Free account management
  • Credit card included as standard
  • Full access via online, phone, and app
  • Automated account-switching service included
  • €100 bonus requires marketing consent and at least five €25+ transactions within three months
  • The stated bonus application deadline (31 August 2026) had already passed at the time of this review
  • Tolerated overdraft at 13.4% p.a. is comparatively expensive
  • Target group doesn't explicitly include freelancers or the self-employed

Verdict

comdirect's Girokonto Aktiv is a solid, free account with full channel coverage and a built-in credit card. The €100 bonus is attractive but tied to genuine activity in the first three months — and the stated application deadline had already passed at the time of this review, so interested customers should verify current validity before opening an account.
