Commerzbank GiroKonto with Free Debit Card at a Glance

Commerzbank's GiroKonto combines app and online banking with a nationwide branch and phone network, and according to the database it targets mainly employees and retirees. The free debit card (Girocard) is built into the product's name, signaling that there are no hidden costs for the basic card.

Costs and Fees

The database lists an account maintenance fee of €4.90 a month (€58.80 a year) — the lowest of the accounts compared here. Commerzbank's offer page clarifies the conditions: the account is fee-free for the first three months regardless, after which the fee applies if total assets held at the bank — balances in overnight, fixed-term, savings and current accounts plus securities holdings — are below €50,000; at €50,000 or above (checked monthly on the last banking day), account maintenance is permanently free. For new customers with modest assets, that means at least three fee-free months to try the account, then the standard fee until the asset threshold is reached.

The arranged overdraft is charged at 11.90% p.a. (on a quarterly rate basis), and a tolerated (unarranged) overdraft at 14.40% p.a. — the highest of the rates seen among the accounts covered here. Online transfers are shown as free of charge, regardless of volume.

Sign-up Bonus

A €100 sign-up bonus is listed for opening the account. It's not condition-free: requirements include opening online, not having held a Commerzbank current account in the previous 24 months, active use over three months with at least five monthly bookings of €25 or more each (e.g. salary, rent, utility bills — transfers between your own accounts don't count), and consent to marketing communications by email and phone that must remain valid for at least three months. According to the offer page, this consent can be given either during account opening, online afterwards, or in a branch.

The bank's offer page additionally shows a referral scheme: successfully referring the account can earn another €100 — up to €200 in total, though only the first €100 is directly tied to opening the account itself, with the remaining €100 being a separate, independent promotion.

Cards, ATMs and App

The Commerzbank Girocard is included free, as is Apple Pay and Google Pay support; an optional credit card can be added. Cash withdrawals are free at Commerzbank's own ATMs, at Cash Group ATMs (Deutsche Bank, HypoVereinsbank, Postbank) and at numerous retail partners such as Rewe, Aldi, Lidl, DM and Edeka (usually with a minimum purchase of €5–20) — an unusually broad free cash network for an account at this price point. Other banks' ATMs, by contrast, charge a fee.

The app offers biometric login, a multibanking overview of all accounts (including at other banks), account alerts, photo and real-time transfers, card management, a "FinanzAnalyse" spending analysis with "FinanzKompass," an ATM/branch finder, and a chat function for direct contact with customer service. Deposits are protected up to €100,000 under statutory guarantee, and a switching service is available.

Who Is It For?

Per the database, the account suits mainly employees and retirees who value a nationwide branch network with extensive free cash access and are willing to actively use the account for three months and consent to marketing communications to earn the bonus. Anyone who'd rather avoid those conditions can still benefit from the low base fee and the three fee-free starting months.

How to Open the Account

Verdict

Commerzbank's GiroKonto stands out for a broad, fee-free cash network, the lowest base fee among the accounts compared here, and a solid €100 sign-up bonus that can be boosted to €200 via the referral scheme. The €4.90 monthly fee can be softened by three free starting months or avoided permanently with €50,000 or more in assets. For anyone who can meet the bonus conditions — three months of active use and consent to marketing communications — this is a feature-rich everyday account with good value.
