Deutsche Bank Business BasicKonto: the cheaper business account model

The Business BasicKonto is the simpler of Deutsche Bank's two classic business accounts, aimed at freelancers, sole proprietors, GmbHs and entrepreneurial companies looking for a leaner and cheaper alternative to the Business ClassicKonto while still wanting access to a branch, phone support and an app.

Costs and fees

According to Deutsche Bank's offer page, the Business BasicKonto costs 14.90 euros per month as a base fee, roughly 10 euros cheaper than the Business ClassicKonto. Our database lists estimated total annual costs of around 387.80 euros for this account. That figure is notably higher than the base fee alone (14.90 euros times 12 months equals 178.80 euros), since it also factors in typical transaction and card costs, giving a more realistic picture of total costs under regular account use than the bare base fee alone. The bank gives no information on a fee waiver, for example based on turnover.

On transaction costs, the offer page confirms exactly the values from our database: a paperless transaction, triggered online or via the app, costs 0.30 euros per item, while a paper-based transaction costs a notably higher 3.00 euros per item. The account is therefore cheaper to run for digitally-operating businesses than for those with many paper documents. Our database lists a 0% interest rate for tolerated (unauthorised) overdrafts; no data is available for an arranged overdraft facility.

Cards and additional features

According to the offer page, the base price of the Business BasicKonto includes a debit card, the Deutsche Bank Card Business. Customers wanting an additional card for other employees or managing directors pay 10.00 euros per year and card according to the offer page. For cash withdrawals abroad, the same rule applies as for the Business ClassicKonto: account holders can withdraw cash free of charge at partner-bank ATMs in more than 60 countries worldwide. No specific figures are given for fees at domestic foreign ATMs.

The account can be accessed through four channels: online banking, phone advice, the local branch and a mobile app. Neither our database nor the bank's offer page lists a welcome bonus or new-customer incentive for the Business BasicKonto. Deposits are protected via the Entschaedigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken GmbH up to 100,000 euros at 100%.

Who is this account suitable for?

According to the stated target group, the Business BasicKonto is aimed at freelancers, sole proprietors, GmbHs and entrepreneurial companies. It suits business customers who can do without some of the extras of the Business ClassicKonto in exchange for a lower monthly base fee, while still valuing the security of an established branch bank with personal advice. For businesses with a high share of paper-based transactions, the cost gap between paperless and paper-based bookings remains relevant and should be factored into the calculation.

A worked cost example

With a base fee of 14.90 euros per month, or 178.80 euros per year, further costs quickly add up under realistic use. At 40 paperless transactions per month, an extra 12.00 euros applies (40 times 0.30 euros), equal to 144.00 euros per year. At 15 paper-based transactions per month, another 45.00 euros per month is added, or 540.00 euros per year, so these two items alone can drive up total costs substantially. This example shows that the roughly 387.80 euros our database lists as the estimated total annual cost already assumes a moderate, not an extreme, transaction volume, and that businesses with many paper documents should budget for noticeably higher costs.

Suitable legal forms

Deutsche Bank names freelancers, sole proprietors, limited liability companies and entrepreneurial companies as the target group for the Business BasicKonto. This means the account targets the same group as the Business ClassicKonto, just with a leaner base fee. No information is available on general partnerships or civil-law partnerships.

Business BasicKonto compared with the Business ClassicKonto

The main difference between the Business BasicKonto and the higher-tier Business ClassicKonto from the same bank lies in the monthly base fee (14.90 versus 24.90 euros) and in the cost per paperless transaction (0.30 versus 0.20 euros). The cost of paper-based transactions, the debit card included in the base price, and free cash withdrawals abroad in more than 60 countries are identical between the two accounts. For businesses with few, mostly digital transactions per month, the slightly higher per-transaction price on the BasicKonto is unlikely to be noticeable, so the lower base fee usually pays off.

Pros and cons

See the summary lists below for the account's main strengths and weaknesses.

Verdict

Deutsche Bank's Business BasicKonto is the cheaper variant within the bank's business account range, offering a notably lower entry price of 14.90 euros per month than the Business ClassicKonto, with otherwise very similar features via branch, phone and app. Customers who do not need the extras of the ClassicKonto get better value with the BasicKonto, but should still keep an eye on the relatively high cost of paper-based transactions. There is no welcome bonus for this account.
