Our review

A current account with a clear condition for staying fee-free

norisbank's Top-Girokonto targets a broad range of customers — employees, students, apprentices, retirees, and the unemployed — who want a digital account with no branch requirement. Account management is free in principle, but not unconditionally: it stays fee-free only for customers under 30, or for anyone with at least €500 in monthly incoming payments. If that threshold isn't met in a given month and the customer is 30 or older, a €3.90 fee is charged at the end of the quarter.

Fees and overdraft rates

The debit card is free, as is the optional credit card, though the latter requires sufficient creditworthiness and regular incoming payments. Cash can be withdrawn free of charge in Germany at around 49,750 Mastercard-branded ATMs from €50 upward; worldwide withdrawals with the debit card are also fee-free from €50, though individual ATM operators may still charge their own fees regardless of norisbank's policy. The arranged overdraft is listed at 10.5% per year according to the product data; the tolerated (unarranged) overdraft is listed at 0% — an unusually favourable figure that should be confirmed directly with norisbank before signing up, since the campaign page did not provide independent confirmation of this rate.

The €120 bonus — and what it actually takes to get it

norisbank prominently advertises a €120 account-switching bonus for new customers. In practice, this bonus is tied to several clearly defined steps, all of which must be fulfilled:

  • Opening a Top-Girokonto and a Top-Zinskonto (savings account) at the same time — a current account alone is not enough
  • Identification exclusively via video verification
  • At least three payment partners (e.g. salary, pension, rent, electricity, mobile contract) must be switched automatically to the new account via the online account-switching service by 30 November 2026
  • According to the bank, the bonus is paid out no later than 15 January 2027
  • Only people who have not held a norisbank account in the past 12 months count as new customers

This is not a bonus you pick up incidentally: anyone who doesn't already want to open a savings account effectively forfeits the €120. On top of that, the mandatory switching service with at least three payment partners and the multi-month wait for payout both require real commitment. Realistically, the bonus is most attractive to people who were already planning a full bank switch, savings account included.

Safety and account switching

Beyond statutory deposit protection, norisbank belongs to the voluntary deposit protection fund of the Association of German Banks, which covers deposits up to 15% of the bank's liable equity capital — shown in the product database with a ceiling of €999,999. An automated account-switching service is available for the actual move, usable independently of the bonus. The account can be managed via online banking, phone, and app; the campaign page did not list specific app features in detail.

Who is it for?

The account is most advantageous for people under 30 and for anyone with at least €500 flowing in monthly, for example via salary or pension. Anyone who meets neither condition pays a modest €3.90 quarterly fee. For frequent travellers, the worldwide fee-free cash withdrawal from €50 is a genuine plus.

Pros and cons

  • Free account management under clear, achievable conditions (under 30 or ≥€500 monthly incoming payments)
  • Free debit card and optional free credit card
  • Worldwide fee-free cash withdrawals from €50
  • Automated account-switching service included
  • €120 bonus only with a simultaneous savings account and several further conditions
  • €3.90 quarterly fee if the age or income threshold isn't met
  • App features not documented in detail on the campaign page
  • Bonus payout delayed by several months

Verdict

The norisbank Top-Girokonto is a solid, conditionally free account with good terms for cash withdrawals at home and abroad. The advertised €120 bonus is real, but tied to a full account switch including a savings account and several payment partners — making it more of a bonus for a bank switch you were planning anyway than a windfall for a simple current account.

  • €120 bonus only with a simultaneous savings account and several further conditions
  • €3.90 quarterly fee outside the fee-waiver conditions
