Postbank Giro plus at a Glance

Giro plus is Postbank's current account — Postbank being part of the Deutsche Bank group — for retail customers who want branch and phone banking alongside the app and online banking. According to the database, it's aimed at employees, students and retirees. As part of the Deutsche Bank group, Postbank benefits from a broad ATM network that overlaps with its sister brand's infrastructure.

Costs and Fees

The database lists an account maintenance fee of €5.90 a month (€70.80 a year). Postbank's offer page clarifies the condition: this lower rate only applies with a monthly incoming payment of at least €1,000. Without that incoming payment, the fee is €6.90 a month instead — the same as Deutsche Bank's AktivKonto, which offers no discount at all. The price listed in the database therefore reflects the cheaper case and shouldn't be read as a guaranteed price for every customer.

The arranged overdraft is charged at 12.04% p.a. (on a quarterly rate basis), while a tolerated (unarranged) overdraft is charged at 13.85% p.a. — both rates are close to Deutsche Bank's, unsurprising given the shared group ownership.

Bonus

No sign-up bonus for opening the account itself is listed in the product data. The offer page only showed a time-limited refer-a-friend scheme (€50 per successful referral, tied to a specific, already-past promotional period) — this is not a regular welcome bonus for new customers and shouldn't be confused with a sign-up credit. Whether and in what form such a referral program is currently running should be confirmed directly with Postbank.

Cards, ATMs and App

The account includes the Postbank Card as a free debit card. The Postbank Mastercard can be added on top, free in the first year and then €29 a year (Mastercard Gold: €59 a year after year one); a supplementary card costs €6 a year. Cash withdrawals with the Postbank Card are free at Cash Group ATMs; no information on ATM fees abroad is available, which frequent travelers should specifically ask about before opening an account.

The app offers three free "Pockets" sub-accounts with their own IBAN — handy for separating savings for travel or larger purchases — plus access to a benefits marketplace with over 100 partner offers. Deposits are protected up to €100,000 under statutory guarantee, and a switching service is available.

Who Is It For?

The account is best value for customers with a regular incoming payment of at least €1,000 a month — such as salary or pension recipients — who also want a nationwide branch and phone network alongside the app. For students or other customers without a regular incoming payment at that level, the €6.90-a-month price remains noticeably higher than many free digital-bank offers.

How to Open the Account

The account can be opened online; no further detail on the exact identification steps was found in the sources reviewed.

Pros and Cons

See the lists at the end of this review for a summary of the account's main strengths and weaknesses.

Verdict

Giro plus is a solid branch-and-app account whose price depends heavily on monthly incoming payments: customers pay €5.90 with at least €1,000 in monthly incoming funds, or €6.90 otherwise. There's currently no classic sign-up bonus for opening the account itself, but the Mastercard is free in the first year, and the app's free Pockets feature is a handy tool for simple savings management. For anyone with regular incoming payments who values personal service, this is a solid account from the Postbank/Deutsche Bank group.

  • Mastercard becomes chargeable from year two (€29/€59 a year)
