Our review

Introduction

Giro pur is Postbank's standard current account, aimed at customers who want a nationwide account backed by a dense network of branches and ATMs — thanks to its partnership with Deutsche Post, Postbank also has a presence in smaller towns. The account combines classic banking services with digital extras such as dedicated sub-accounts within the app.

Fees

Giro pur is free if at least 900 euros in incoming payments are credited to the account each month and the account is used digitally. If this threshold is not met, a monthly account fee of 5.90 euros applies. Pupils, students, and apprentices receive the account permanently free of charge with proof of status, regardless of incoming payments.

Bonus and features

New customers can receive a credit of 150 euros. The bonus is tied to several conditions: the account must be opened during the promotional period from 3 August to 14 September 2026, at least 500 euros in incoming payments must be recorded in the first full calendar month, and no Postbank current account may have existed in the 6 months before applying. The bonus is paid out by the end of December 2026 — meaning several months can pass between account opening and the credit.

The included Postbank Card (debit card) is free; an additional card costs 6 euros per year. Customers who want a credit card pay 29 euros a year for the Postbank Mastercard. Cash withdrawals are free at around 7,000 Cash Group ATMs (Postbank, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, HypoVereinsbank); a fee of 6 euros applies for cash withdrawals at Postbank counters or Deutsche Post branches. Alternatively, the free Bargeld-Code service lets customers deposit or withdraw cash at participating retail stores without a card at all.

The app uses BestSign technology, which confirms transfers and logins via fingerprint, Face ID, or password. The "Pockets" feature allows up to three free sub-accounts with their own IBAN, useful for saving separately toward specific expenses. Standard features such as online banking, transfers, standing orders, and digital statements round out the offering.

Who it suits

Giro pur is a good fit for customers with regular incoming payments above 900 euros who want to benefit from free account management, as well as for pupils, students, and apprentices, for whom the account is free regardless. Anyone who withdraws a lot of cash at the counter rather than at ATMs should factor in the 6-euro fee.

Verdict

Giro pur stands out with a dense, free ATM network and a clear path to fee-free banking above 900 euros in monthly incoming payments. The 150-euro bonus is attractive but requires patience until payout and account opening within a fixed window. For students and apprentices, the account is permanently free regardless.
