Postbank Giro pur: current account with a EUR 150 welcome bonus

Giro pur is Postbank's standard online current account, aimed at anyone who wants a digital everyday account combined with access to a nationwide branch and ATM network. Unlike pure direct banks, Postbank also offers in-person contact through its partner branches and Deutsche Post, which makes this account appealing for people who don't want to bank exclusively online.

Account fee: free only under conditions

Important for your budgeting: Giro pur is not unconditionally free. The account is fee-free only if at least EUR 900 in incoming payments is credited each month and the account is used digitally. If that threshold isn't reached, a monthly account fee of EUR 5.90 applies. Pupils, students and apprentices are exempt from this condition and pay EUR 0 permanently with proof of status. Anyone not routing a regular salary of this size through the account should budget for the monthly fee.

For the overdraft facility, Postbank charges 10.79% p.a. interest on the arranged overdraft and 12.60% p.a. on an unarranged overdraft beyond the agreed limit — both standard rates for a traditional branch-bank current account.

The EUR 150 bonus: attainable, but tied to clear conditions

New customers receive a one-off bonus of EUR 150 for opening the account online. The conditions are multi-step and worth reading carefully before relying on the headline figure:

  • The account must be opened within the promotional period, which according to the provider ends on 14 September 2026 at the latest — the date the application is received is decisive.
  • The application must be submitted via the Postbank website, the app, or online banking.
  • The new account must be used as a salary or payment account: at least EUR 500 in non-cash deposits is required in the first full calendar month after application.
  • The offer applies only to genuine new customers — anyone who already held a Postbank current account in the six months before applying is excluded.

So the bonus is not an automatic gift for simply opening the account: it requires an actual salary or payment inflow of at least EUR 500 in the following month, and anyone who was already a customer in the last six months gets nothing. For people already planning to switch their salary account, the hurdle is manageable; for anyone wanting a secondary account without regular incoming payments, the bonus is effectively out of reach. According to the provider, the bonus is paid out by the end of December 2026 at the latest.

Cards, ATM network and app

The Postbank Card (debit card) is included in the account at no extra cost; an additional card for a second person costs EUR 6 per year. Anyone wanting a credit card as well pays EUR 29 per year for the Postbank Mastercard. Cash withdrawals are free at around 7,000 Cash Group ATMs nationwide; withdrawals at the counter in Postbank and Deutsche Post partner branches cost EUR 6. The provider's offer page does not state fees for withdrawals abroad — worth checking the current price list before travelling.

The Postbank app offers BestSign technology for authorising transfers via fingerprint or face recognition, a cash code for contactless deposits and withdrawals without a card, a pocket feature for digital sub-accounts, and access to a rewards portal with over 100 partner offers. Deposits are protected up to EUR 100,000 per customer via the Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken GmbH. The account is accessible equally via online banking, phone, branch and app, and a free account-switching service makes moving from your old bank easier.

Who is Giro pur suited to?

Giro pur suits people with a regular salary of over EUR 900 a month who also occasionally want to use a branch or phone hotline alongside the app. Pupils, students and apprentices also benefit from permanent fee exemption regardless of income. Anyone looking for a pure secondary account without regular incoming payments will pay the EUR 5.90 monthly fee and should compare alternatives.

How to open the account

The account is opened online via the Postbank website, the app, or online banking. To qualify for the bonus, it's essential to submit the application within the promotional period and to record at least EUR 500 in incoming payments in the first full month afterwards.

Pros and cons

  • EUR 150 welcome bonus for genuine new customers with salary inflow
  • Nationwide Cash Group branch and ATM network
  • App with BestSign, cash code and digital sub-accounts
  • Account-switching service included
  • Free only from EUR 900 monthly incoming payments, otherwise EUR 5.90/month
  • Bonus requires at least EUR 500 in incoming payments the following month — not automatic
  • Credit card carries a comparatively high EUR 29 annual fee
  • No stated fee for withdrawals abroad on the offer page

Verdict

Giro pur is a solid branch-bank current account with an attractive but conditional EUR 150 bonus. Anyone depositing at least EUR 900 in salary regularly gets a free account with a broad ATM network and useful app features. Without that income, the advantage is significantly reduced by the EUR 5.90 monthly fee.
