How to Cancel a Direct Debit in Your Banking App

Why It Is Worth Knowing This Right

Sometimes money is taken from your account that you did not expect. This is called a direct debit. A direct debit is a payment that a company takes directly from your account. It is only allowed to do this if you once gave it permission, for example for a bill or a subscription.

If a charge is wrong or you do not recognise it, you have a legal right: you can get the money back within eight weeks of the charge date. You do not need to give a reason. This guide shows you, step by step, how to do this directly in your bank's banking app — without a phone call and without visiting a branch.

How to Cancel a Direct Debit Step by Step

  1. Open the banking app on your smartphone. An app is a small program on your phone. Tap the icon of your bank on your home screen — usually a small square picture with your bank's logo.
  2. Log in as you normally do — for example with your PIN (your personal secret number) or with your fingerprint.
  3. Tap the menu item "Transactions" or "Account statement." There you will see a list of all payments taken from your account.
  4. Find the charge you want to get back in this list. Look at the company name and the amount.
  5. Tap that one charge to open its details.
  6. On this details screen, look for a button with wording like "Cancel direct debit," "Reverse payment," or "Request refund." Not every bank uses the same wording — look for similar words.
  7. Tap that button.
  8. Read the text that appears carefully. It explains that the charge will be reversed.
  9. Confirm the cancellation by tapping "Confirm" or "Yes, cancel."
  10. Wait for the confirmation inside the app. You will usually see a green message or a checkmark showing that the cancellation was submitted successfully.
  11. Check your account balance again after one to two business days. The returned money should appear as a credit on your account.

You cannot break anything by following these steps. Cancelling a direct debit does not harm your account. If a screen looks different from what is described here, stay calm. Go slowly and look for similar words like "cancel," "reverse," or "refund."

Important note about scams: Some scammers call and pretend to be "your bank." They claim they need to confirm the cancellation by phone and ask for a code you received by text message. A real bank never asks for this code over the phone. If this happens, hang up immediately. Then call your bank yourself — use the phone number printed on the back of your bank card, not the number the caller gave you.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

Sometimes things do not go exactly as expected. That is not a reason to worry — here is what to do:

  • You cannot find a cancellation option in the app: Not every banking app offers this feature directly. In this case, call the phone number on the back of your bank card and ask for help cancelling the direct debit.
  • The eight-week deadline has already passed: The simple, no-reason-needed cancellation is no longer possible. Contact your bank anyway — for an unauthorised charge (one made without your permission), a longer deadline of up to 13 months often applies.
  • The money does not come back: First wait two full business days. If no money has arrived after that, call your bank using the number on your bank card. Never read a text-message code or your password aloud over the phone — not even to your own bank.

Quick Recap

These charges usually run through your checking account. A good checking account shows direct debits clearly and makes cancelling them especially easy.
