A business account built for the founding phase

The FYRST Gründerkonto ("Founder Account") from FYRST is designed, as the name suggests, exclusively for newly founded businesses. According to the provider's terms, the business must have been founded no more than 365 days before the account is opened. Anyone who meets this requirement can open the account as a freelancer, sole trader, or in the form of a GmbH, GmbH & Co. KG, GbR, UG, OHG, KG or e.K. — the offer therefore covers virtually every legal form commonly used by founders and small businesses in Germany. The account can be managed online, via the app, or by phone through customer service.

Fees and terms

The account is completely free in the first year: no account management fees apply. From the second year onward, FYRST charges €10 per month for account management, according to the provider's own website. Anyone planning to keep using the account beyond the founding phase should budget for this jump in cost — "free" here explicitly applies only to the first year, not permanently. An optional sub-account, by contrast, remains free of charge indefinitely.

For booking entries, there is a generous monthly free allowance: 75 paperless (online) bookings per month are free, with each additional one costing €0.08. The additional sub-account brings another 50 free booking entries per month. Paper-based or receipt-backed bookings — such as cash deposit slips at a counter — cost €4 per entry, considerably more expensive than the online bookings.

According to the product data, interest on a tolerated account overdraft is listed at 0% p.a.; however, the provider's own website makes no separate statement on this, so this figure could not be independently confirmed before actually opening an account. Anyone planning to rely on an overdraft facility should ask FYRST directly about the exact terms before signing up. Deposits are protected under the deposit guarantee scheme of the Bundesverband deutscher Banken — according to the product data sheet, up to 15% of the issuing bank's relevant liable capital.

Card and first-year extras

In the first year, a FYRST Card (debit Mastercard) is included free of charge in the account package. FYRST also offers a whole bundle of additional services free in the first year: an IONOS website or online shop, optionally the sevDesk accounting software, a DATEV interface to a tax advisor, an insurance check, and the ability to deposit and withdraw cash at around 7,000 locations nationwide. These extras are especially interesting for founders who want support with a website, bookkeeping and tax-advisor connectivity alongside the account itself. Whether these extras remain free beyond the first year is not clear from the available data.

Who is this account for?

The FYRST Gründerkonto is explicitly tailored to the founding phase and suits freelancers, sole traders, and small corporations or partnerships whose business is no more than a year old best. It's especially attractive for anyone who, in that first year, values a free account with a generous online-booking allowance plus extras around a website, bookkeeping and tax advice. Businesses older than a year simply cannot open the account. And anyone looking for a permanently free account should factor in the fee jump from the second year onward (€10 per month), since at that point the account no longer stands out much from many regular business accounts.

Pros and cons

  • Free in the first year, including a debit card (FYRST Card)
  • 75 free online booking entries per month, a low €0.08 per additional one
  • Broad eligibility: from freelancers to GmbH, GmbH & Co. KG and other legal forms
  • Free first-year extras bundle (website, accounting software, DATEV link, insurance check)
  • Cash deposits and withdrawals possible at around 7,000 locations nationwide
  • €10 monthly account fee kicks in from the second year
  • Only available if the business was founded within the last 365 days
  • Paper-based bookings are relatively expensive at €4 per entry
  • No confirmed information on the overdraft interest rate on the provider's own site

Verdict

The FYRST Gründerkonto is a solid choice for anyone in their first twelve months after founding a business who wants a free account with practical extras. The combination of a zero fee in year one, a generous online-booking allowance, and a bundle of founder-focused extras makes it particularly appealing for freelancers and small businesses. Anyone planning to keep the account beyond the founding phase should budget firmly for the €10 monthly fee that applies from the second year onward.
