Guide: Term deposits
Comparing fixed-term deposits (Festgeld): fixed rate, fixed term - and what to know about tax and deposit protection.
Choose a term that matches when you need the money
You generally cannot access a fixed-term deposit during its term. Only lock in money you are sure you will not need before maturity; an instant-access account (Tagesgeld) is better for an emergency fund.
Check for automatic renewal
Some banks automatically renew a fixed-term deposit at maturity, often at a lower rate, and your money is then locked up again. Check before signing what happens at the end of the term and note the date so you can cancel or reinvest in time.
Don't forget the exemption order
Interest on fixed-term deposits is subject to flat-rate tax. With an exemption order at the bank, investment income up to the saver's allowance of €1,000 a year (€2,000 for jointly assessed couples) stays tax-free. Split the amount across your banks according to where you expect to earn income.
Protected by law up to €100,000 per bank
Like other deposits, fixed-term deposits are protected by law up to €100,000 per customer and bank. For banks from other EU countries, the home country's deposit guarantee scheme applies. You can spread larger amounts across several banks.
